Whenever you get asked ‘What makes you unique?’ in an interview, don’t be scared but use it as an opportunity to explain why you are the best person for the role.
Asking the same question a different way
There are many ways that interviewers can ask this question but are trying to get the same result – to find out what makes you a stand-out candidate. They could phrase it in a number of ways:
Why are you the best candidate for this job?
What can you bring to this job that’s different from other candidates?
What makes you stand out from other candidates?
What sets you apart from other candidates?
No matter how they ask this question, the overall goal is the same. So now let’s find out how to answer this question the right way.
Answering the question
1. Mention skills from the job description
This is a great way to show you’ve done your research. Use the job description as a guide so you know exactly which skills to highlight throughout the interview (but don’t recite it word for word).
2. Provide specific examples
This is another way to use the job description. Refer to previous accomplishments from prior roles that relate to the position you’re interviewing for.
3. Avoid generic phrases
Every candidate is asked this question so you need to stand out. Make your answer compelling. Instead of saying you're a ‘hard worker,’ give specific examples about the work you’ve accomplished.
4. Include key personality traits that mean you can deliver results
Someone else might have similar skills as you, but everyone has their own personality. Along with the skills you have include that you are a team player or very tenacious.
There’s no one person that has the exact experience, skills, and personality traits that you do – that is what makes you unique. Make sure the interviewer knows this as well and how it can benefit their business.
